SSVBC 16-2 experienced a lot of team and individual growth over their first travel tournament of the season. Over the course of the three days, they pitted themselves against a number of tough teams from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.
The first day of play was a strong showing for the girls – they went into the pool ranked 3rd and managed to walk away with the #2 spot in the pool. They had strong wins against Force VBA – 25-22 and 25-9 and Apex 15 Delta – 25-17 and 25-20. The one loss of the day was a tight match against OVA 16-2 Elevate, and although it was a loss, the girls battled hard to make every point count. For the day, Megan led serving with 9 aces, followed by Stacie with 5 and Ireland with 3. Caitlin put up five solo blocks along with Stacie’s 4, and Taylor’s 2. Judy and Sierra killed it on defense with 45 and 17 digs, respectively, and Hayley, Addy, and Maddy ran our offense with 5, 5, and 3 kills apiece.
After the strong first day, the team had a much tougher Day 2, both in the teams that they were playing and in their own playing efforts. The team dropped sets to CPA Adidas, ITVC 16 Black, and PSVBA 14 Todd. Despite their struggles as a team, they still worked to improve individually. The serve receive average improved, with help from Judy who held a 1.7 average for the day, Megan contributed 4 more aces at the service line, and Stacie and Hayley led the offense with 5 kills apiece, followed by Addy with 4 and Megan with 3.
Regrouped and rested up, and the team entered Day 3 with a slightly altered lineup and a fresh mindset. Their bracket match was against Northern Idaho 15 Gold. The girls jumped out to a quick lead and took the first set but struggled to maintain over the three sets of the match. While it was close, we ultimately dropped the match – 25-20, 13-25, and 13-15. Stacie had 4 kills followed by Caitlin and Maddy with 3 each. While Judy’s defense put up 15 digs, Addy’s had 12, and Megan and Sierra each snagged 10. The team fought hard, but NI took the match and moved to the next round of play.
Despite the ups and downs, the coaches were pleased with a lot of the growth that emerged out of the weekend. Their focus on serve receive was demonstrated in the way the girls brought a stronger serve-receive mentality than they have seen so far. They are looking forward to bringing our strong play to this weekend’s first Power League and moving up to Flight 4.
